The famed run between Athens and Sparta by Athenian messenger Pheidippides is the apocryphal basis of the modern marathon. Today the route is home to the Spartahlon, a gruelling 246 km ultramarathon. The event challenges runners to confront extreme hardship and surpass the limits of both their body and mind, all within prescribed times. As four competitors confront this challenge, they are forced to answer the question: why do we do this to ourselves?
